John Coburn Award for Emerging Artists
A non acquisitive prize of $5,000, known as the John Coburn Emerging Artist Award, will be awarded, in the opinion of the judges, for the best contemporary religious art work submitted by an emerging professional artist. The John Coburn Emerging Artist Award is strictly nonsectarian.
John Coburn came to prominence as an artist through winning the 1960 Blake Prize. This enabled him to begin a professional career as an artist. John went on to make a major contribution to Australian visual culture and is remembered for his paintings, design, and tapestries including the curtains for the Sydney Opera House. He was a Director of the Blake Society and designed the Society's logo. He was a teacher and active supporter of young and emerging artists and was, for a number of years, Director of the National Art School Darlinghurst. The Society does not restrict entries to works related to any faith or any artistic style.
